Library Trip

Today we went a walk to Kirkwall Library with Class 5/6. The weather was wild and windy but we still had lots of fun with our buddies. There were lots and lots of books to choose from and we enjoyed listening to the stories. When we got back to nursery we had a bit of snack and planned what we might like to do together in the coming weeks. Some suggestions were to play outside, play with the toys in the nursery, go for more walks, continue our underpants stories, do some painting, challenge each other to build and create, go to Muddisdale, have a party!
Keep an eye on the blog to see what we get up to next.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Thank you to all the families who helped us find materials to help us learn a bit about Fairtrade.

We spent two weeks learning a little bit about what this means and the children really picked up on the theme of being fair.

We watched youtube clips about what fairtrade means and about where our chocolate comes from.

Freddy and Flora

A day in the life of a cocoa farmer

We looked closely at the fairtrade logo.  One of our children described it as "The blue is the sky and the green is the fields.  The bit in the middle is the farmer."  Our peedie man below is demonstrating the farmer saying 'yes' just like in the logo because he is getting treated fairly.

We had a look at different products to see if we could find out if they were fairtrade or not.

We wore our fairtrade stickers to remind us to have a look at home for fairtrade items and some of us brought in a few items for our friends to look at.
We noticed that our bananas for snack were fairtrade.

We went on a walk through the school to see if we could spot some of the fairtrade work that the bigger classes were doing.

We create a chart of items that were fairtrade and ones that are not.  This led to some deep discussions about the types of food we have at home.

We finished our week by baking some fairtrade chocolate chip and banana muffins.

There is a display of all our learning from this week just above the caddie coat pegs at the entrance of the nursery.  You can find the recipe that we used in our baking up here as well as the children's thoughts on what they learned about fairtrade.

World Book Day 2017

We have been celebrating World Book Day in Nursery Today with the children in Class 5/6. The older children read lots of the Underpants Stories to us and we had lots of ideas for making our own Underpants Story. We also got given our World Book Day tokens this week, these can be exchanged in the Orcadian Book Shop. The Nursery age books this year are:

Peppa Pig Loves World Book Day & Everyone loves Underpants by Claire Freedman
