RSPB Visit

Lindsay Taylor from the RSPB came to visit us in nursery today.

Learning about Orkney birds:

We met some of the birds that live in Orkney.

We learned that some birds are better than others at sharing. The robins don't like to share one bit and so you only usually see one robin at a time.

Lindsey told us all about feeding the birds and to remember that as well as food the birds also need a little drink of water in the winter time when its cold outside.

We sang some new songs and did a little dance.

Making the Bird Food:

We got our hands dirty making bird food, we put seeds into apples and made balls of food using flour, fat, water, seeds, fruit and oats. We think the birds at Glaitness are going to have full tummies when they leave our Nursery Garden now!

Veg Garden

On Friday afternoon we got busy digging up the tatties and carrots that have been growing in the Nursery Garden. Look out this week to see what we turn them into....

This week we made soup using the vegetables that we dug up from the Nursery Garden.
They were very dirty so we gave them a good wash to get them nice and clean.

Then we carefully chopped up the carrots and tatties and put them in the pot with the stock to make our soup.

We all had soup and bread for snack it tasted yummy!

Parent Information Evening

A big thank you to parents who were able to join us for our information evening.  We have uploaded our presentation to the blog so all parents can access the information we shared during our event. If you have any questions, please come and ask us or send us an email.

Mrs Miller shared with the parents the importance of listening and talking with our children from an early age.  There is excellent information regarding this on www.thecommunicationtrust.org.uk and a super booklet that you can download called 'Small Talk' where you can find loads of activities and ideas for promoting listening and talking at home.

We also shared our packed lunch guidelines for children who are staying for full days.  If you would like a copy of this, please ask when you come in.

Toothbrushing, tubing and tiny muscles!

We have had a busy few days in nursery so far.  On Monday, we had the toothbrushing ladies in teaching us how important it is to brush our teeth twice everyday.  We got to practice brushing in peedie circles on all the special teddies and even have our own dentist area now.

We have been making all the peedie muscles in our hand stonger as we made our own necklaces with pasta and string...

and when we made lots of different marks in the saharah sand.

We enjoyed seeing all the different colours that we could find when we uncovered the lightbox underneath.

We have been learning about capacity as we pour and fill from different scoops and containers with lots of coloured water.  Some of us were making potions and some were making soup!  We talked about the different colours we were mixing and which scoops worked the best.  Some of us figured out how to work the pipettes by sqeezing them really hard.

We have been extra busy outside playing with the different tubes and pipes.  We made ramps for balls and water to run down.  We made a slurry machine so that we could get our grass to grow longer.  We tried putting the pipes into the trees to see if we could balance them.  We worked together to take the equipment out, to carry it and to work out how it best joined together.

Key Groups

Thank you to all parents for your patience over the past week.  We have been busy establishing a key worker and key group system in the nursery which has been running very successfully with the support of all parents.  We have found that each key worker has been able to spend quality time with their own key group getting to know each individual child and build up relationships as we help settle the children into the nursery setting.

Meet the groups:

Selkies led by Donna and Lee-Anne

Caddies led by Vicky

 Puffins led by Leona

The children have become very proud of their group over the last week and are beginning to look for each other when they are playing.  We hope that our feedback time at the end of the session is helping parents learn a little about what we have done during the nursery session.
